FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

1. What is the advantage of taking an online course?
The major advantage is the flexibility that the online format offers. You can pace yourself. You still have deadlines, but you don’t meet on campus at a particular hour. As long as you get your assignments in on time, you can do the work anywhere you have access to a networked computer and at any time convenient for you.

2. What type of learner successfully completes online courses?
You should be self-motivated, independent, and disciplined. If you are a procrastinator, you may find yourself too far behind to catch up. You must be comfortable presenting yourself in writing since there is no face-to-face exchange except for the on-campus orientation session.

3. How do I enroll in the course?
You may access enrollment/registration information from the Peralta Colleges home page www.peralta.cc.ca.us

4. What do I need for an online course?
You need an e-mail account and access to the Internet. You will receive password access to a course e-mail account on the first day of classes.

5. What if I don’t have access to a computer?
All currently enrolled students may use computers in Merritt’s electronic classroom, D178.

6. Do I need computer experience?
You will have to demonstrate that you can perform several basic functions by sending me e-mail responses during the first week of the semester.

7. Can I enroll late in the class?
If space is available, Merritt permits students to add through a specified date.

8. If I add the course late, how do I make up the missed assignments?
You will have one week from the date you add to make up all work. After the one-week make-up period, all assignments are due on the published dates.

9. What are the components of the course?

10. When will a course syllabus and other material be available?
On the first day of the semester, students admitted to the course will receive password access to a syllabus, a more detailed FAQ, guidelines for posting to the VC, a suggested time-management system, and links to related sites.

11. How can I contact my instructor?
My voice mail is (510) 436-2546. My e-mail is ekreisler@peralta.cc.ca.us .  I look forward to meeting each of you online and in person during one of the on-campus orientations.
