INTRO TO SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS
3 units
Cross listed as: PRINCIPLES OF ECOLOGY
Team taught by the Environmental Studies faculty. This overview of how the natural world works covers everything from the beginnings of life to the latest environmental technologies and issues. Excellent text, short field trip. Satisfy your Biology General Education requirement. Required for all Environmental Certificates and Degrees.

URBAN ECOLOGY
2 units

Investigation of selected urban environmental issues: Urban and natural resource policy issues, ecological restoration projects.

ENVIRONMENTAL CAREERS

Explore your career development strategies within the diverse and fast-growing environmental fields. Required for all Environmental Majors and Certificates. The Environmental field is growing rapidly with a wide variety of career types. Use this course to choose your career and academic direction.

SPECIAL PROJECTS IN ECOLOGICAL DESIGN, INSTALLATION, AND MAINTENANCE

This workshops series on current environmental topics meets at various times throughout the semester. Topics covered include: wildlife gardening, eco-building practicum, water quality data gathering, community water systems and sustainable water use, various watershed-related topics, biodiesel, and more. ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD METHODS
3-5 units
Instructor: Joshua Meidav and other faculty
Exploration of a diversity of environments in the East Bay, emphasizing the field study methods and techniques appropriate to each environment.

TREE TO SEA

Instructors: Robin Freeman and Maria Morales
This class teaches hiking, restoration, natural history, cultural history observation and group leadership, starting in the East Bay hills, traveling along the Bay Trail wetlands, onto boats, and ending at Pacific tidepools.

RESTORATION LANDSCAPING
2 units
Instructor: Dave Kaplow
Dave Kaplow, owner of Pacific Open Space, has been a well-known restorationist for 20 years. This field course will cover grassland and upland areas and fire landscaping. Required for EMART Certificate.

WETLANDS RESTORATION
3 units
Instructor: Laurel Marcus
Principles and practices in the development and restoration of wetlands: Seasonal wetlands, fresh- and salt-water marshlands, wetland environments.

WATERSHED ASSESSMENT
0.5-3 units
Instructor: Laurel Marcus
Workshops on watershed assessment and adaptive management techniques for whole watersheds: Water quality, quantity, habitat, and beneficial uses.

RESTORATION AND MONITORING OF WATERCOURSES

Instructor: Steve Cochrane
This popular field course provides an overview of the citizen monitoring and creek restoration movements locally and nationally, explores the elements of restoration and monitoring, and uses a variety of monitoring and restoration techniques on Bay Area watercourses. Required for EMART.

INTRODUCTION TO GREEN BUILDING AND ECOLOGICAL DESIGN
3 units
Instructors: L. Bruce Douglas, Robin Freeman, Leslie Geathers
Introduction to green and natural building and renovation. Hands-on projects such as solar energy, siting, building envelope, interior finishes, conserving and reducing waste, home and commercial green retrofits, and rating systems and standards. Field trips to various sites.

BAY AREA FIELD STUDIES
1-2 units, variable
Instructor: Teresa Williams- Drame
An in-the-field introduction to the richness of the geologic environment. Tour the geology of the Bay Area with a popular and informative professor.
