What is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI)?

Merritt College has been proudly designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) by the United States Department of Education.

The Aspira Project – Title V Grant (2022–2027)

Merritt College was awarded the Title V Hispanic Serving Institution grant in 2022 to launch the Aspira Project. This five-year initiative is designed to strengthen our ability to serve Latinx/e and other low-income students by expanding access, improving support services, and building clear pathways to degree completion, transfer, and careers.

Through the Aspira Project, Merritt College is investing in:

  • Outreach to local high schools and expansion of dual enrollment opportunities.

  • Centralized onboarding, advising, and tutoring services.

  • Case management advising and first-year experience courses with financial literacy.

  • Transfer Support

  • Enhanced transfer advising systems and closer collaboration with UC and CSU partners.

  • Streamlined academic pathways to help more students move from Merritt to four-year institutions.

  • Career and Job Placement 

  • Career-aligned academic pathways with increased access to high-demand jobs.

  • Internships, externships, and work-based learning opportunities.

  • Career and transfer advisors supporting bilingual and bicultural career counseling.

  • Faculty and Staff Professional Development

  • Ongoing training in culturally responsive teaching and advising practices.

  • Participation in the ESCALA professional development program for HSIs.

  • Equity-focused strategies to foster belonging and success for Latinx/e and low-income students.

Activities Supported by the Aspira Project

Some of the key initiatives and events funded include:

  • Dual Enrollment expansion and outreach to high schools
  • First Year Experience with financial literacy
  • Proactive advising and tutoring in high-need courses
  • Bilingual/bicultural financial aid and matriculation support
  • Transfer and career fairs, job placement services, and university tours
  • Faculty professional development workshops focused on student equity
