Merritt College’s Liberal Arts program offers a broad foundation in humanities, social sciences, and communication, preparing students for transfer, career opportunities, and lifelong learning.
The Liberal Arts degree and certificate programs are designed for students who wish to have a broad knowledge of liberal arts and sciences.
If you plan to transfer to the California State University system (CSU), you are encouraged to pursue a Certificate of Achievement in Liberal Arts (CSUGE or IGETC). You should consult with a counselor to develop your own program of study.
If you plan to transfer to the California State University system OR the University of California system, you are encouraged to pursue an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts which includes additional coursework in an “Area of Emphasis.” The choices for areas of emphasis are AA in Liberal Arts with Emphasis in Arts and Humanities and AA in Liberal Arts with Emphasis in Cross-Cultural Studies. Either of these would be an ideal choice for students who want to satisfy their general education requirements plus focus on transferable course work that relates to majors at CSU or UC. Please consult with a counselor for specific information regarding your intended major at the specific college/university of your choice.
See links on the left and below for more details as well as curriculum and course information.
The Arts and Humanities Associate in Arts (AA) degree is designed for students who wish a broad knowledge of liberal arts and sciences with an area of emphasis in Arts and Humanities.
The Cross-Cultural Studies Associate in Arts (AA) degree program is designed for students who wish a broad knowledge of liberal arts and sciences with an area of emphasis in Cross-Cultural Studies.
The Art Foundation Certificate of Achievement program prepares students to enter vocational programs and fields of study that require knowledge of basic drawing, painting, color theory, 2-D composition and design.
A Certificate of Achievement in Botanical Illustration provides students with the skills and portfolio to apply to advanced scientific illustration programs, or the basis for a career as a botanical artist. It is also an attractive resume enhancement for students in other related programs, such as landscape design, botany and biology.
If you plan to transfer to the California State University system (CSU) and want to complete and have certified the CSU General Education Breadth Requirements, you are encouraged to pursue a Liberal Arts: CSU GE-Breath Certificate of Achievement.
Students are encouraged to pursue an Intersegmental General Education Curriculum (IGETC) Certificate of Achievement if they plan to transfer to either the University of California system or the California State University system and want to fulfill lower-division general education requirements.
