Accessible Testing Accommodations and Procedures

Accessible Testing 

Accessible testing is a common academic accommodation that ensures students with disabilities have equal access to demonstrate their knowledge during course assessments.

Student Accessibility Services (SAS) administers exams in accordance with instructor requirements while ensuring students are provided an equitable opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge. All accommodations are implemented in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), applicable California laws and regulations, and Peralta Community College District policies.

Testing Accommodations Procedures

Student Accessibility Services – Merritt College

1. Meet with your SAS Counselor to document your disability and verify your need for testing accommodations.

2. Provide Your Accommodation Form to Your Instructor
Obtain your Services & Accommodations Form from your SAS Counselor and share it with your instructor.

Meet privately with your instructor to review and discuss your approved accommodations.

Scheduling Your Exam

3. Schedule in Advance (Minimum 5 School Days)

At least five (5) school days prior to your exam, contact the Assessment Specialist:

You will need to:

  • Schedule your testing appointment

  • Download the Exam Proctoring Form

  • Provide the form to your instructor for completion


4. Plan for the Entire Semester
Review your course syllabus and schedule all exams for the semester as early as possible.

5. Complete the Proctoring Form with Your Instructor

  • Remain with your instructor while they complete their portion of the form

    • Exam date and time

    • Approved materials

    • Timing considerations (especially if you have another class immediately after)

6. Exam Submission by Instructor
Your instructor will submit the exam by:

  • Delivering it in a manila envelope to SAS (P-305C), or

  • Emailing it directly to SAS Assessment Specialist Soledad Leung at sleung@peralta.edu

Testing Policies & Expectations

  • Testing Supplies
    Students must bring all required testing materials. SAS does not provide supplies.
  • Tardiness Policy
    Students arriving more than 15 minutes late must reschedule with their instructor first then notify SAS Assessment Specialist.
  • Rescheduling
    A new Exam Proctoring Form must be completed with the instructor.
  • No-Show Policy
    Exams will be returned to the instructor if a student does not attend the scheduled appointment.
  • Academic Integrity

    Any form of cheating will result in the exam being stopped and the instructor being notified 

    Use of a cell phone at any time during testing will be considered cheating

  • Personal Belongings
    All personal items, including cell phones, must be placed in a locker or away during testing.
  • Assistive Technology (Kurzweil & Dragon)

    Only SAS-approved computers may be used
    Computers must be set up in advance with the student’s profile

  • Unauthorized Materials

    Unless explicitly approved by the instructor and documented on the form, the following items are not permitted: 

    Notes
    Books
    Calculators
    Backpacks or purse
    Cell phones (This applies even if an approved item is forgotten)
